International Day of Education

Every year on January 24, International Day of Education is celebrated. This holiday was established by the United Nations (UN) in 2018 to highlight the importance of education for achieving global peace and sustainable development.

Why January 24th?

The date of January 24th was chosen to commemorate the signing of the Convention on the Basic Rights and Duties in Education, which was adopted at the 14th session of UNESCO in 1960. This convention establishes the right to education for all, regardless of race, gender, religion, or social status.

How is International Day of Education celebrated?

International Day of Education is celebrated around the world in various ways. In many countries, educational events are held, such as discussions, lectures, exhibitions, or workshops. The goal of these events is to raise awareness of the importance of education and to support access to quality education for all.

In the Czech Republic, International Day of Education is celebrated, for example, through the activities of the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports. In 2023, for example, a virtual seminar on the topic of "Education for Sustainable Development" was held.
